Great Winter Cocktails Under 1 Std Drink

Following on from the success of similar posts last year, we have teamed up with our friends at Johnnie Walker to share some delicious, new mixed drinks that are perfect for these colder winter nights with family and friends in front of the fire. All of them have the added benefit of just 1 Standard Drink.

Why 1 Standard drink you ask?  Well, a standard drink (a.k.a 10gms of pure alcohol) is all the adult human liver can process in 1 hour. Anything more than 1 standard drink per hour and the alcohol will start to impact your mind and body. You can find out more about how alcohol affects you here and here.

Alcohol is certainly not essential to having a good time. In fact, too much alcohol typically means we end up remembering the occasion for all the wrong reasons, so if you want to make smarter drinking choices this winter, you might like to try one of these. The Six Barrel Soda cocktails will also be available in selected bars around NZ during July so keep an eye out and spread the word:

Whisky ‘Flower’

Our own unique take on the traditional Whisky Sour using Six Barrel Soda’s Elderflower syrup – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml of Six Barrel Soda Elderflower Syrup
  • 120ml Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Elderflower Syrup
  • Charge with Soda water and stir
  • Garnish with an orange or lemon curl

Barley Tonic

Johnnie Walker enhanced with a traditional lemon barley soda for a fresh tasting end of day sipper – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml Lemon Barley Cordial Lemon Barley Cordial
  • 120ml of Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Lemon Barley Cordial
  • Charge with Soda Water and stir
  • Garnish with a Lemon wedge

Just Peachy

A sweet treat for your senses, this is an iced tea cocktail you won’t forget – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml of Six Barrel Soda Peach Tea Syrup
  • 120ml Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Peach Tea Syrup
  • Charge with Soda water and stir
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick

Johnnie Crisp

Johnnie Walker flawlessly mixed with apple juice and crisp apple kombucha – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml Cloudy Apple Juice
  • 100ml of Apple Kombucha

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Apple Juice
  • Charge with Kombucha and stir
  • Garnish with a lime or apple wedge.

Ginger Johnnie

A love affair between fire and spice, this is our unique take on the refreshing whisky ginger or ginger highball cocktails – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml of Six Barrel Soda Ginger Syrup
  • 120ml Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Ginger Syrup
  • Charge with Soda water and stir
  • Garnish with fresh ginger and star anise or a slice of lemon

Johnnie’s Whisky Lemonade

Whisky and lemonade, the Johnnie Walker way. This one is sure to leave your taste buds tingling – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml of Six Barrel Soda Lemon Syrup
  • 120ml Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Lemon Syrup
  • Charge with Soda water and stir
  • Garnish with a Lemon curl and mint leaves

Classic Whisky Ginger

Tall, dark and elegant this classic cocktail provides the perfect balance of spicy and fresh – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 150ml of Ginger Ale

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker
  • Charge with Soda Water and stir
  • Garnish with a Lemon wedge

High Tea

Sweetness with a soul – this Highball green tea cocktail will help awaken your senses – 1.0 STD DRINKS (approx. 60 mins for the liver to process)

INGREDIENTS

  • 30ml Johnnie Walker Red or Black Label
  • 30ml of Six Barrel Soda Green Tea Syrup
  • 120ml Soda Water

BUILD METHOD

  • Fill Highball glass with Ice
  • Add Johnnie Walker and Green Tea Syrup
  • Charge with Soda water and stir
  • Garnish with a pineapple leaf or cucumber
